Police Welfare

There were over a thousand assaults on police officers and staff last year in Avon and Somerset. This means every day 3 officers were punched, kicked, scratched or spat on while doing their job. This is unacceptable!

  • I support initiatives led by the Chief Constable to ensure that Courts consider each police assault and review the body worn camera evidence – which is worn by all front-line officers;
  • I will work with the Chief Constable to ensure that officers have the right equipment to protect themselves;
  • I support the plans to increase the robustness of sentencing guidelines for assaults on police.

Given the reduction in police funding and officer numbers, officers remain under pressure across our area. Even with the additional funding that has been promised it will take many years to recruit and train these officers to cover the gaps. Policing needs long term thinking and commitments not politically driven short termism – I will make the case for a long-term approach on behalf of local people and officers and staff.
